2 arrested for leaving bags unattended

Two men aged 25 and 27 were arrested yesterday for public nuisance after leaving three bags unattended at Aljunied MRT station.

The police were alerted to the unattended bags at the concourse of the station at 9.52am. The bags were later found to contain only food and household items.

Officers from the Bedok Police Division and Public Transport Security Command, along with SMRT staff, traced and detained the owners of the bags at about 10.15am.

The two men had left their bags there while they went to the toilet, preliminary investigations have revealed.

Police investigations are still ongoing, the police said in a news release last night.

The police explained they treat all security threats seriously and will not hesitate to take action against anyone who intentionally causes public alarm. They also reminded the public not to leave personal belongings unattended. Any suspicious items or behaviour should be reported to MRT staff or to the police immediately.

Last month, a 69-year-old man was arrested after leaving flour at Woodleigh MRT station, sparking a security scare that closed the station for about three hours.

A 39-year-old man was also arrested last month for leaving a bag unattended at Hougang MRT station. The station was also briefly shut down as a result.
