SINGAPORE - A day before an undergraduate was to return to Singapore from his home town in Fujian, China, he found out that he would be temporarily evicted from his rented room in Bukit Panjang.

The 26-year-old, a Chinese national who wanted to be known only as Mr Lin, said he received a message from his landlord here telling him that he would have to find another place to stay during the 14-day leave of absence (LOA) he was required to take.
