SINGAPORE - The pieces on the elegant wooden chessboard are moved with rapid, practised ease. Within mere seconds, chess enthusiast Jimmy Tan has demonstrated a classic set of opening moves dubbed the "Italian opening".

He made a bigger move of sorts, founding the private members' chess club Singapore Chess Social in a rented second-floor unit in a Rowell Road shophouse in Little India.
