CNY Survival Guide 2014: 8 actually cool horse songs to welcome CNY

So the Year of the Horse is galloping in, but you're already tired of hearing the same old Chinese New Year songs.

Sure, they're classics, but maybe you want something a little different.

Mix it up a little and set the mood this Chinese New Year with our top eight songs about horses.

1) Band Of Horses - Great Salt Lake

What better band to start the list? Seattle's Band Of Horses delivers a dreamy song that evokes warm, nostalgic feelings of a childhood home - good feelings to have as you reconnect with relatives.

2) The Chemical Brothers - Horse Power

The fourth single off the British electronic musicians' 2010 album Further, Horse Power takes a bit of time to get up to speed.

But once it gets going, it's a thrilling, heart-pounding ride. The video, while fairly straightforward, backs up the song's industrial feeling.

3) Rolling Stones - Wild Horses

"Wild horses couldn't drag me away," The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger drawls as he sings of an unconditional love. One of their all-time classics, and perfect drive-time music for the trip home.

4) America - A Horse With No Name

Call them last generation's Fleet Foxes. The first and most successful single by the band America, it took some flak for somewhat bizarre lyrics (The heat was hot, really?) but it still paints a picture of the stark harshness of the desert.

One of the few songs with cross-generational appeal, it's something your whole family can sing along to while you're in the car.

5) Foals - My Number

My Number is just one of many toe-tapping songs from British band Foals, who topped the year-ending charts of 2013 for many music magazines like NME and Q Magazine. And yes, before you ask - foals are young horses, so it still counts.

6) Aerosmith - Back In The Saddle

Dating back to 1977, Back In The Saddle comes from veteran rock band Aerosmith's fourth album, Rocks, which Allmusic describes as capturing the band "at their most raw and rocking". Originally just about a cowboy's exploits, the song took on new meaning when they reunited in 1984 for the Back In The Saddle Again tour.

7) U2 - Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horse

Sort of the counterpoint to The Rolling Stones' Wild Horses song, U2's song meanwhile has the singer as he pines for a free-spirited girl who has him under her spell. A classic, bittersweet love song.

8) KT Tunstall - Black Horse And The Cherry Tree

KT Tunstall's eccentric, yet completely catchy Black Horse And The Cherry Tree rounds off our list of horse songs. The song tells the story of needing to find your path and having the strength to fight off temptation - fitting, as we enter the new year.
