Cleaner jailed for knocking policeman unconscious with baton

A cleaner who knocked a policeman unconscious with a police T-baton, was sentenced to four months in jail on Wednesday by a district court. Ahmad Syidi Awang on Friday had pleaded guilty to causing hurt to 30-year-old Staff Sergeant Muhamad Lufti Abdul Razak. He committed the offence at about 6pm on June 26 last year at Marsiling Drive.

Ahmad Syidi, 40, and his brother Mohammad Payros, 35, were unhappy when they were stopped on their way home by police for a routine check.

When Inspector Soh Swee Liang escorted Mohammad Payros to the police car to search him, Ahmad Syidi became angry and followed them. He disregarded warnings from Staff Sergeant Muhamad Lufti and Special Constable Yang Xiaobin to stop and instead turned violent.

In the ensuing struggle, Ahmad Syidi grabbed hold of the baton and hit the staff sergeant on the head causing him to black out. In the meantime, Mohammad Payros struggled to flee and scratched Inspector Soh on the ear and elbow. The younger brother was sentenced to two months' jail last October for hurting Inspector Soh.
