Chefs help students make dumplings for the needy

Close to 30 students from Nanyang Polytechnic's food and beverage course will bring a little cheer to low-income elderly households on Wednesday evening. With the help of chefs from the Si Chuan Dou Hua restaurant chain, the 17- and 18-year-old students learnt how to make rice dumplings.

This Wednesday makes the start of this year's Dragon Boat Festival, when the Chinese traditionally eat rice dumplings, or zongzi. The students will spend the evening distributing 400 dumplings to 80 low-income and elderly households in Tiong Bahru.

"Many of these elderly live alone. In this time where they do not have many family or friends, we want to at least let them be able to celebrate by eating the dumplings we have made," said student Celine Lee, 18.

The project is a collaboration between the Central Singapore Community Development Council, the Si Chuan Dou Hua restaurant chain and Nanyang Polytechnic. It is also part of Project We Care, an initiative led by Corporate Singapore and the People's Association to encourage corporate volunteerism in Singapore.
