Charities get $2.5 million boost from SIA

SINGAPORE- Some 13,000 participants took part in an aviation-themed run held at the Marina Bay area on Sunday morning.

Together with another charity gala dinner held last month, Singapore Airlines raised $2.5 million for the Community Chest.

Under the Care & Share Movement, a national fund-raising effort to spur donations and volunteerism in the run-up to Singapore's 50th anniversary celebrations in 2015, the donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Singapore Government. This means a total of $5 million will go towards helping the less privileged.

SIA chairman Stephen Lee presented the cheque of $2.5 million to Community Chest chairman Phillip Tan at a ceremony held after the run.

Said Mr Tan: "These events allowed the volunteerism mindset and fund-raising opportunities to continue into 2015, as the nation celebrates Singapore's 50th birthday in the true spirit of caring and sharing."
