Minister for Social and Family Development Chan Chun Sing will attend the 10th Asean Socio-Cultural Community council meeting on Thursday in Brunei.

Topics that will be discussed during the meeting include a sub-regional haze monitoring system recommended by the Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee on Transboundary Haze Pollution in July. This group was formed in 2006 to help Indonesia combat the annual haze, which has affected the region for years.

The monitoring system will help identify errant companies whose activities contributed to haze. The group has also pushed for Indonesia to provide official and accurate land concession maps.

All 10 Asean countries - Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore - will be represented.
