SINGAPORE - California Fitness announced that its club at Raffles Place is closed "until further notice" on Saturday (July 16) morning.

It announced the closure in a Facebook post at about 7.30am and asked its members to use its clubs in Novena and Bugis.

California Fitness Singapore closed its Ngee Ann City outlet in February this year.

Gym member Sasha Loo, 30, who joined in November last year, said that she paid close to $1,000 upfront for a 14-month membership.

The accountant, who uses the gym facilities two to three times a week, said things "look normal" at the Bugis branch on Saturday morning.

But the closure of two of the gym chain's branches in central locations has inconvenienced her, she said.

"I feel very upset for the people who work here and those who pay upfront," she told The Straits Times.

"If they do close, they should do it properly, instead of doing it suddenly."

On Tuesday, California Fitness shut all its outlets in Hong Kong.

JV Fitness, which operates the giant chain, closed all 12 of its gyms, including two called mYoga and one facility known as Leap, pending a winding-up petition against the company.

When contacted on Thursday, a California Fitness spokesman told The Straits Times that "California Fitness Hong Kong and California Fitness Singapore operate separately and independently", and declined further comment.
