Bus driver fined, banned from driving for hitting pedestrian at crossing

A private bus driver was fined $4,500 and banned from driving for three years on Wednesday for causing grievous hurt to a pedestrian.

Zhang Zhenfang, 42, a Chinese national, pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt to Madam Fong Foh Chin, 63, by doing an act so negligently as to endanger life at the signalised cross-junction of Jurong West Street 42 and Jurong West Avenue 1 on April 13.

He was driving along Jurong West Street 42 when he failed to give way to the victim while making a left turn. After the victim fell, the bus continued to move forward. Its front left tyre ran over the victim's legs, causing her serious bodily injuries.

Zhang stopped when he heard someone scream. He alighted and saw the victim pinned under the bus. Madam Fong's right leg below the knee was amputated as a result of the accident. She was warded for about three months. Zhang could have been jailed up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000.
