Burger King gave out 1,000 of its Whopper burgers to soldiers on Friday as a show of appreciation for their service to the nation.

From 1.30pm, the fast food chain's White Sands outlet in Pasir Ris started giving out the burgers and as of 3.30pm, about 300 burgers had been redeemed.

Soldiers leaving the army camp on Pulau Tekong are usually dropped off by bus at Pasir Ris MRT station which is next to White Sands shopping centre.

The solders were also given the option to complete their meals with a canned drink and a packet of medium fries at a discounted price of $2.

Burger King Singapore's general manager, Mr Wong Shyang Jiuu, said: "We know that our soldiers, especially the recruits, work and train extremely hard, and as such they deserve a fulfilling meal that they truly love. We wanted to show our appreciation and give them an opportunity to satiate their appetite, on us." The giveaway follows the announcement that two stars of army-themed local film Ah Boys to Men, Mr Tosh Zhang and Mr Wang Wei Liang, were selected as the fast food chain's brand ambassadors.
