Law enforcement agencies in Singapore should consider video taping the statements of people who are arrested, so that the recordings can be produced in court when they are accused of impropriety, said two Members of Parliament during the Singapore Budget 2013.

Mr Hri Kumar Nair (Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC) and Ms Sylvia Lim (Aljunied GRC) made the suggestions during the Budget debate on Friday, saying that it would help to protect the agencies such as the police and the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau from accusations of wrongdoing.

The practice, already prevalent in countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, and South Korea, could also save the court precious time, said the MPs.

Disputes over statements raised by defence lawyers are now heard in trials-within-a-trial, and investigation officers are usually called in to testify. Senior Minister of State for Law, Indranee Rajah said that the Law Ministry understands from the Ministry of Home Affairs that there are currently no plans to introduce video recording for the taking of statement.
