Budget 2013: ITE to pilot new foundation programme next year

The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) will pilot an extended Nitec foundation programme next year to help weaker students.

A student enrolled in a Nitec programme at ITE usually spends two years on their course. But those enrolled in the new programe will spend one more year.

This was announced by Senior Minister of State for Education and Law, Ms Indranee Rajah, in Parliament on Wednesday.

The purpose of the new programme is to give students have an additional year to build on their English and numeracy skills, so that they will be in a better position to complete their courses successfully. The programme will also focus on helping students improve their self-confidence and motivation, through character education programmes and motivational camps.

ITE will admit 180 Normal (Technical) students who have less than two N-level passes to the new three-year programme called the the Extended Nitec Foundation Programme. It will also be open to candidates from two specialised schools for students who failed their Primary School Leaving Examination, NorthLight School and Assumption Pathway School.
