Boon Lay residents treated to art in the heartland at Glitter Under the Stars event

Boon Lay residents were treated to a night of song, dance, and art performances at Saturday's Glitter Under the Stars event held at Jurong Central Park.

The event was held as part of the PAssionArts Month, a month-long community arts event launched yesterday evening by Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong.

The event is aimed at giving residents the opportunity to experience and enjoy art within the heartland.

At the heart of the park was an art installation - the Tree of Life - co-created by local visual artist Jeremy Hiah and Boon Lay residents.

Mr Hiah is one of 41 local artists who are involved in this year's PAssionArts event.

Mr Wong said he hoped to encourage more interaction between our local artists and residents.

"This is a direction I've been trying to push," he said. "There is merit in going this way because our professional artists and art groups have a lot to offer, and we want to get them to mentor, engage, and inspire our community artists at the community level."

Various arts groups, such as local drumming group Bloco Singapura and singers from Peranakan interest group, Main Wayang, also performed simultaneously at different parts of the field.

The event will span five weekends, and will take place at various locations across the island.
