First-time blood donor Lydia Wong, 27, was among those taking part in the Red Apple Day blood donation drive held by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) at its News Centre in Toa Payoh yesterday. In all, about 125 units of blood were collected at the drive. A total of 164 members of the public and SPH staff signed up to donate, but some were unable to do so for medical reasons. Successful donors were each given a goodie bag that included a red apple. The blood donation drive, now into its 16th year, is held twice a year. It is one of the biggest here, according to the Singapore Red Cross Society, a partner of the event. Another round is usually held before National Day.
