The ban on the consumption of alcohol in public places in Little India will continue, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade and Industry S Iswaran announced on Tuesday night, during a visit to a foreign workers' dormitory in Jurong.

As for the sale of alcohol in the area, the police have been in discussions with stakeholders on what restrictions to put in place and should be able to announce more details on Wednesday, he added.

This past weekend saw the police enforce a ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol in a 1.1 sq km dry zone in Little India.

Last night, Mr Iswaran said: "To be very clear the prohibition on the consumption of alcohol in public places in Little India, in the affected area, will continue. The police will announce more details.

"In terms of the sale, the police are now in discussion with stakeholders to finalise the details and this will be announced shortly."

As for longer term measures, Mr Iswaran said these would be informed by the Committee of Inquiry's findings and recommendations.

There was also an ongoing public consultation on alcohol consumption and "we will take all these into account into working out longer term plans in terms of how we manage areas where workers from overseas congregate", he sad.
