SINGAPORE - Canned food maker Ayam Brand has reassured customers that it is "impossible" for its undamaged products to be contaminated, following a video posted on social media that allegedly shows a live maggot in one of its canned tuna products.

The brand will also not be issuing a recall of the product, it said in response to queries from The Straits Times on Wednesday (May 23).

Ayam Brand, in its statement, said it is "scientifically impossible" for any live foreign matter such as a worm to be present in non-damaged canned food.

"Sterilisation concretely means that the can of tuna, after being sealed, has gone through a further high-heat cooking at temperature higher than 100 deg C for more than one hour," it said.

"No living organism can survive a sterilisation process."

This comes after a four-second video of a single maggot wriggling in tuna meat was posted on the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority's (AVA) Facebook page by user Linda Xue on May 14.

In her caption, Ms Xue appealed to the AVA to investigate the matter, and posted photos of the affected can of tuna.

In response to media queries, AVA said on Wednesday that it is investigating the matter.

In Ms Xue's photos posted on Facebook, the affected canned meat was allegedly from Ayam Brand's Tuna Mayonnaise and showed that the product was manufactured last year.

The "best before" date, "02-11-2020", was also printed on the can.

Ayam Brand said past experience showed that investigations of similar cases have all found that the live foreign matter was not from the canned product.

"Consumers can be assured that Ayam Brand canned products are completely safe to consume due to our stringent quality controls and world-class standards," it added.
