Before Madam Halimah Yacob met reporters waiting to interview her after she made her acceptance speech as President-elect, she made time for a woman who asked nervously if she could take a photograph with her.

Cleaner Phua Siew Buay, 64, who has worked at the People's Association Headquarters for three months, was delighted when the incoming president agreed.

She said she was honoured that Madam Halimah made time for her, and proudly sent the photo to her friends on WhatsApp.

Pointing to the photo of both of them, decked in bright orange and smiling, Ms Phua said: "My friends said we look like sisters."
