50,000 in the thick of navy 'battle'

Barring an outbreak of war, yesterday was probably the closest some 50,000 people will ever get to experiencing battle on the high seas.

Visitors to the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) Open House were treated to an ear-busting dynamic display, which began with members of the elite Naval Diving Unit dropping into the water from hovering Chinook helicopters, before simulating a daring hostage rescue.

The public can also, for the first time, tour not just the RSN's warships, but also those from Australia, India, Indonesia and the US.

Senior Minister of State for Defence Chan Chun Sing began proceedings by reminding visitors not to forget the navy's "behind the scenes" work defending Singapore.

The open house at the Changi Naval Base is from 9am to 7pm. It started yesterday and ends today. There are free shuttle bus rides from Singapore Expo Hall 3 from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

The dynamic display is at 10.30am and 2.30pm.
