SINGAPORE - Thirty-four motorists aged between 24 and 63 will be charged on Dec 19 with drink driving.

They were arrested between August and December after failing breathalyser tests, said the police on Dec 18.

Two of the motorists are repeat offenders.

A 36-year-old and 44-year-old were stopped during checks by the police on Sept 30 and Nov 5 respectively. They were found to be driving under the influence.

Repeat offenders can be fined up to $20,000 and jailed for up to two years.

Meanwhile, another two motorists face an additional charge of leaving their car “in a manner causing undue inconvenience to others”.

A 52-year-old and a 33-year-old had left their cars in a stationary position along Airport Road and Brickland Road respectively.

This caused obstruction and could have been dangerous for others on the road, said the police.

Investigations found that the men had fallen asleep behind the wheel after they had driven their cars while intoxicated.

Those who are convicted for the first time of drink driving face a fine of up to $10,000 or a jail term of up to 12 months, or both.

In addition to the penalty for drink driving, the men who left their cars in a manner inconveniencing others also face a fine of up to $2,000, or a jail term or up to three months, or both, if it is their first conviction.

The police stressed that driving under the influence of alcohol is dangerous and irresponsible, and advised members of the public who intend to consume alcohol to opt for public transport or arrange to be driven home by a non-drinking driver.

“All motorists are reminded to abide by traffic laws to keep the roads safe for everyone, especially during the year-end festivities,” added the police.

Statistics provided by the police showed that there were

10 deaths from 123 accidents caused by drink driving

in the first nine months of 2024.

Some 1,260 people were arrested for drink driving in the same period.
