SINGAPORE – Two men were taken to hospital after inhaling smoke from a fire that broke out in a Tampines HDB flat on Oct 3.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at Block 422 Tampines Street 41 at 11.45pm.

The police evacuated 80 people from the affected block as a precautionary measure.

Preliminary findings indicate that the fire was likely electrical in origin and started in a bedroom on the fourth floor, SCDF said.

The SCDF advised the public not to overload electrical outlets with appliances or leave batteries and other devices charging unattended for extended periods.

Appliances should be switched off when not in use, and only appliances and electrical plugs bearing the safety mark should be used, it added.

SCDF also said frayed wires or cracked cords should be replaced or repaired immediately. Wires should not be run under carpets or mats, or placed near hot surfaces.
