SINGAPORE - Two men have been arrested for stealing from people in Orchard Road, the police said on Wednesday (Feb 14).

A woman made a police report at 8.50pm on Monday, saying that her bag had been stolen.

She had placed her bag behind her while sitting down at a shopping mall in Orchard Road.

However, when she turned to retrieve it, the bag containing credit cards and cash of about $300 had gone missing.

Officers from Tanglin Police Division identified two suspects aged 24 and 32 using closed-circuit television footage and arrested them in Balestier Road on Valentine's Day.

Four handphones, believed to be fraudulently obtained, were seized from them.

The pair are believed to be involved in at least three other cases of theft from person that took place at shopping malls in Orchard Road and HarbourFront Walk on Monday and Tuesday.

Both suspects will be charged in court with the offence of theft with common intention.

If found guilty, they face up to three years' jail and/or a fine.

The police in their statement advised the public to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings and to safeguard their belongings in crowded areas, especially during the festive season.
