18-year-old investigated by police for making false report of robbery and assault

A teenager is being investigated for making a false report after he told the police on Saturday that two men had assaulted and robbed him of his mobile phone and EZlink card in Jurong East.

The police said in a statement on Saturday that its investigations found discrepancies in the information provided by the 18-year-old, who eventually admitted that he had lodged a false report.

Investigations are ongoing. Anyone convicted of giving false information to a public servant may be jailed up to one year, fined up to $5,000 or both.

Commander of Clementi Police Division and Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Melvin Yong warned that the police would take stern actions against those who give false information to the police as these actions utilize resources which could otherwise be put to better use in crime fighting.
