SINGAPORE – A total of $165,100 in fines and two stop-work orders were issued by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) after inspections at 500 worksites from June to August uncovered workplace hazards.

In a Facebook post on Sept 25, MOM said it recorded 1,253 unsafe observations, including uneven steel plates, waste blocking walkways and wet kitchen floors.

Also, workers were seen wearing shoes with poor grip and inadequate protection.

Such hazards are known as “slips, trips and falls” hazards.

“These lapses put workers’ lives at risk across sectors, such as construction, manufacturing, marine, services, and transportation and storage,” said MOM.

It added that “slips, trips and falls” hazards accounted for almost a third of major workplace injuries in 2024.

There were a total of 587 major injuries and 43 fatalities in the workplace in 2024, according to MOM’s Workplace Safety and Health Report 2024.

Examples of major injuries include amputations, blindness, deafness and paralysis, according to the ministry.

It advised workplaces to ensure that steel plates are level, walkways are kept clear, ramps are fitted with anti-slip surfaces, and anti-slip mats are placed in high-risk areas.

From April to June, the ministry issued a total of

$230,100 in fines and three stop-work orders

after conducting 514 site inspections. A total of 1,263 unsafe conditions were observed in these checks, which targeted machinery safety across the construction, manufacturing and marine sectors.
