Wardens at Changi Prison Complex look out for anxious first-time inmates to reassure them that they will be safe. For example, each cell has an intercom for emergencies, allowing prisoners quick access to wardens. The Straits Times saw what first-time inmates go through during a recent visit to the complex.
An inter-agency task force called Uplift has been set up to help children from disadvantaged households meet their full potential. It will focus on three areas: improving students' motivation; tackling long-term absenteeism and dropout rates; and stepping up parent outreach and parenting programmes for less privileged families.
