Look Back 2019: Opposition goings-on

There were multiple developments on the opposition front this year, from a court verdict on the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council saga to the launch of former People's Action Party MP Tan Cheng Bock's Progress Singapore Party. Tham Yuen-C looks at key developments.

For the first time since 2011, the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) run by the Workers' Party (WP) managed to submit clean audited accounts to the Ministry of National Development.

This helped AHTC get a green score for corporate governance in the annual Town Council Management Report, which measures compliance with the law in areas such as awarding tenders, among other things. It would have been reason to celebrate, except that a long-running lawsuit involving AHTC is not quite over.
