Opening of Parliament: MPs share behind-the-scenes snaps

SINGAPORE - Singapore's 13th Parliament opened on Friday (Jan 15) with the swearing-in ceremony of the Members of Parliament (MPs).

The oath taking by 89 elected MPs and two Non-Constituency MPs (NCMPs) was a solemn affair, but it was also a social event attended by friends and family.

Social media posts by the MPs give the public a look at what went on before and after the oath taking.

Women MPs brightened up the House at the President's address on Friday evening with their colourful dresses.

Here's one of 18 women MPs, many in traditional garb.

Mr Baey Yam Keng posted one of Tampines MP Cheng Li Hui (from left, behind), Tanjong Pagar MP Joan Pereira, West Coast MP Foo Mee Har, Senior Minister of State Indranee Rajah and Marine Parade MP Fatimah Lateef.

Aljunied MP Sylvia Lim is all for women power. Posting this photo of her and Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob, she said: "As mothers, daughters, wives and as equal citizens, our contribution is vital to Singapore's well-being. C'mon sisters!"

There are now 21 women MPs in the House, and 70 men. Tanjong Pagar MP Indranee (left) posted this group shot with (left to right) Senior Minister of State Josephine Teo, Ms Foo and Ms Pereira.

Ms Indranee and Ms Sim Ann, both Senior Ministers of State for Finance.

Another all-women shot with West Coast MP Jessica Tan Soon Neo, Senior Minister of State Amy Khor, Ms Indranee and Nee Soon MP Lee Bee Wah.

It was a family outing for some MPs, such as Parliamentary Secretary Baey Yam Keng, who was there with his parents.

MacPherson MP Tin Pei Ling's parents had a "wefie" moment with PM Lee Hsien Loong.

Tampines MP Desmond Choo posted a couple shot with his wife Pamela, and a group shot with his fellow Tampines MPs and their family.

Nee Soon MP Louis Ng shared a photo of the oath of allegiance he took.

Past and present NCMPs gathered for this shot. Mr Gerald Giam, Mr Leon Perera, Mr Yee Jenn Jong and Mr Dennis Tan from the Workers' Party. Mr Tan and Mr Perera were sworn in on Friday, while Mr Giam and Mr Yee were NCMPs in the previous Parliament.
