Mr Patrick Tay (West Coast GRC) asked the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) to consider upgrading the current hockey village in Boon Lay, which is owned and operated by national sports agency SportsSG.
He said the facility, being located adjacent to the Boon Lay Community Club, is an excellent extension opportunity considering the limited space offered by the CC.
Integrity as criterion
The Government can consider including criteria such as the integrity of voluntary welfare organisations to decide which of them should get its dollar-for-dollar matching grant, said Nominated MP Azmoon Ahmad.
This will encourage them to improve governance standards, he said.
Unlock more sports facilities within schools for use by the community to reduce the need for new infrastructure to be built, urged Mr Melvin Yong (Tanjong Pagar GRC).
In response, MCCY Minister Grace Fu said that there are now close to 260 facilities, including indoor sports halls, courts and fields, that are open for shared use under the Dual-Use Scheme. The remaining 300-plus facilities will be made open progressively by around 2020.
Champion the arts?
Just like how Singapore's President is already a champion for the needy through the President's Challenge, is it possible for the President to also support the arts through another platform?
This was a proposal by Nominated MP Kok Heng Leun in Parliament yesterday, who said that such a move could attract the private sector and the public to support the arts sector.
Calling it an "excellent" suggestion, MCCY's Senior Minister of State Sim Ann said the ministry would be happy to work with the arts community to come up with proposals for the President's office to consider.
