SINGAPORE - Nee Soon GRC MP Louis Ng experienced first-hand what it was like to be a Town Council cleaner on Friday (Jan 8).

The first-term MP swept the streets and emptied rubbish bins along with the Nee-Soon Town Council cleaners, photos on his Facebook page showed.

Mr Ng wrote: "It was a physically exhausting experience but I also experienced something beautiful. I experienced how Hanif was clearly well-loved by the community and how he is so full of smiles."

Residents smiled and waved to the cleaner and chatted with him, Mr Ng said.

Many of his Facebook followers posted encouraging comments.

Said Logapreyan Renganathan: "Lead by example! Proud of you mate."

But some pointed out that the cleaners could benefit from better tools.

Mr Ng, who is the founder of the Animal Concerns Research & Education Society, announced last November that he will be trying out different jobs each month to better understand the issues they face.

He spent a day as a private car hire driver. The 11 passengers who took his car were given rides for free, while Mr Ng donated the fare amount he would have collected.

In November, Mr Ng did a shift as a healthcare worker at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.
