Why the Empire debate matters

The days of Empire may have long gone, but the rise of new powers and ethno-nationalism has revived interest in the colonial legacy and its impact on our world today

No historian, regardless of his or her dexterity and flair in writing, could conceivably write a "happy" history of World War II.

And if a historian did attempt such a venture, others would probably regard such an enterprise with some degree of bewilderment, or even take offence at the thought that such a thing had been attempted in the first place.
