Progressive governments have generally taken a laissez-faire approach towards the regulation of technology companies.

That seems to be changing. But regulating the technology sector today will be more difficult than regulating any industry in history because of the exponential rate of change, the complexities arising with artificial intelligence and the strong likelihood of unintended consequences that would lead to the stymieing of innovation.
