Umno's courtship of PAS a risky move

Images of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi shaking hands with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang at the Islamist party's recent general assembly is yet another sign of the shifting political landscape in Malaysia after its watershed May general election.

The amity between the leaders of the two rival parties comes amid talk that they are moving towards a possible formal alliance. However, should it come to pass, it may lead to unintended consequences, including the splintering of Umno.
