US Defence Secretary James Mattis' resignation confirms that President Donald Trump is now forging foreign policy essentially on his own.

Stemming on its face from Mr Trump's decision, announced on Twitter, to remove US military forces from Syria, in fact Mr Trump has signalled displeasure with Mr Mattis and the bipartisan foreign policy consensus he championed.
