Time to close the NRIC loophole for SingPass

Enough of the inertia. Government effort is needed to stop accepting the NRIC number as the default SingPass user ID and to push people to change the latter too.

Last week, former presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian published his National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) number on his Facebook page, along with his e-mail address, mobile phone number and date of birth.

He did it to prove there was no need to overreact when it comes to personal data breaches, writing on Facebook: "I find that the paranoia about the privacy of NRIC and contact details to be overblown."
