I recently took out my old turntable from the storeroom, dusted off years of dirt and neglect, hooked it to my equally ancient amplifier, put on a vinyl record, and waited for the music to emerge.

I did not know what to expect, or whether it would work after such a long period of disuse, and it felt like waiting for a voice from the dead.
