Earlier this week, two nations with distinct martial traditions but separated by a vast distance honoured their heroes. Britain’s Remembrance Sunday on Nov 9 was uneventful, as King Charles and Queen Camilla led commemoration services at London’s Cenotaph. 

On the other hand, the following day’s announcement in Jakarta that President Prabowo Subianto had elevated

the late former president Suharto to the pantheon of national heroes

– looking past Mr Suharto’s controversial final decade in office – led to street protests.
