It's a curious creature - half lion, half fish - perched upright, almost like a seahorse, ceaselessly spewing water into a bay.

On paper, this may not seem the most compelling icon for branding Singapore as a destination, but clearly the Merlion, which celebrates its 50th birthday on Sept 15, has evolved to become a well-loved landmark in our city, and a well-recognised icon beyond our borders.
