Singapore is keeping a steady rudder on its defence diplomacy amid rising tensions between the great powers in the Asia-Pacific.

The signs of stress are clear from the many recent reports on US-China trade spats and American warships staging freedom of navigation patrols near Chinese-claimed islands in the South China Sea. Last year, the US Pacific Command based in Hawaii was renamed the Indo-Pacific Command in a none too subtle move to enhance India's regional role as a counter to China's ascendancy.
