The shipping industry is one of the most important in the world. Without shipping, there will be no maritime trade. Without maritime trade, international trade as a whole will be severely handicapped. With less trade, people will be deprived of their food, medicine and other essentials; business and industry will lack raw materials, components and energy. This is why Singapore holds an annual Maritime Week.

The shipping industry needs peace at sea to function effectively and efficiently. Peace at sea is threatened by tension and conflict between states. The current geopolitical landscape is unstable. This is bad for the shipping community. Many other challenges to the shipping industry flow from geopolitical instability.
