Sitting at the open-air terrace of a colonial-era building in Mumbai’s humid heat one late May afternoon, a group of grassroots leaders are discussing the importance of keeping the communal peace – and how they are going about it.

“We have had women going house to house, having frank talks with boys aged 22, 24, giving warnings,” says one of them, a coordinator at the Mohalla Committee Movement Trust (MCMT), recounting the modus operandi in defusing a recent budding conflict.
