Strategic role of submarines in Singapore's defence policy
Singapore's recent acquisition of advanced submarines has raised questions on whether the Republic is contributing to a defence arms race in the region
At the recent launch of Singapore's most advanced submarine, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen cited the increased defence spending and modernisation in Asia as part of the reason why the acquisition of the Type 218SG submarines was timely.
He had suggested there was a need to keep pace with the growth of other militaries and navies in the Asia-Pacific region.
