The older man darted among the much younger players and, jumping, shot the basketball clean through the hoop. Nimble and fleet-footed, he moved around effortlessly, often moving so fast I could tell where he was only by following his head of white hair.

My partner and I walk past this basketball court near our home several nights a week, but on that recent evening, we stopped to watch. After the game, I walked up to him and started a conversation.
