Virus in the US: States and civil society step up to deal with crisis

While the federal government has been criticised for its slow response, the local authorities have been decisive and many grassroots efforts see people self-isolating or helping others

With the coronavirus outbreak spreading in the United States, friends and relatives in Asia have sent me messages asking how my family and I are faring, just as I sent similar messages to them a couple of months ago when the virus was spreading in Asia.

Some note with alarm news headlines highlighting the lack of the US federal government's preparedness for the pandemic, as reflected in the shortage of test kits. They point to speeches and tweets by President Donald Trump indicating he is ignorant of the science behind the virus' spread and control, and is not taking the outbreak seriously enough.
