Much attention has been paid recently to changes in the education system with the introduction of subject-based banding, the review of fees and bursaries, and talk of early childhood education. In the wake of the President's Award for Teachers and Teachers' Day, it may also be time to look at the teaching profession that is an integral pillar of the system.

The issue of teacher burnout has received some attention in recent years and some factors adding to the strain have been addressed. In 2016, the Ministry of Education revealed that the attrition rate for teachers was 3 per cent, lower than the 10 per cent reported by private companies.
