Earlier this year, I chanced upon Amazon's newly launched grocery store in Seattle. What looked like an NTUC FairPrice outlet at first was anything but.

Inside, customers were navigating the shop floor, picking out items in a self-service fashion and leaving without the need to check out. With a chilled can of LaCroix sparkling water on hand, I followed suit, bill automatically charged to the e-wallet on my iPhone on my way out through gantries not unlike my daily routine of riding the MRT.
