More than 250 species of corals can be found in Singapore’s waters, making the Republic’s reefs surprisingly diverse given their location along one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
The reefs are important for coastal protection, fisheries and recreation. Yet Singapore’s coral reefs had a narrow escape from bleaching in 2023, as sea temperatures rose close to levels that could stress corals and turn them white.
