Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan is not a man you'd ordinarily associate with finesse when handling diplomatic issues, or the media for that matter.

Garrulous and prickly, he is better known for bunging media people in jail than standing up for them. Turkey has in recent times jailed more journalists than any other nation, if figures from the Committee to Project Journalists are a reliable guide.
