Nato's woes and the echoes in Asia

Questions are being asked about the future of the Atlantic alliance on its 70th anniversary. Its troubles offer lessons for America's friends and allies in the Pacific as well.

Seventy years ago this week, the 12 founding members signed the Nato treaty, creating the alliance which committed America to defend Europe and Europeans to defend one another.

More than anything else, Nato has defined the post-World War II strategic order and America's leading role in it - not just in Europe but around the world.
