SYDNEY • At last year's general election in Australia, the ruling Coalition won a surprise narrow victory, partly due to its spectacular success in the state of Queensland, where Labor won just six of 30 seats.

The Queensland result was credited in large part to the Coalition's strong support for a controversial coal mine proposed by India's Adani Enterprises. The vast mine project became a lightning rod for a debate that has dominated Australian politics for more than a decade: jobs versus climate.
