Mum and dad, it's my turn to take care of you now

When my mother had a major operation on July 7 for a recurring intestinal problem and was hospitalised for six days, the episode offered further validation for her fatalistic life philosophy.

She gloomily declared that the operation was only to be expected because it was exactly 10 years since her previous one and that was the way life works: The script is written in advance and everything happens in cycles, especially suffering.
